Wine Glass Rack

Posted on April 24, 2019April 30, 2019 by admin

My wife mentioned that we did not have proper wine glasses aboard. Drinking wine from a mug is not very elegant. I looked for plastic wine glasses first, but they were all ugly, expensive or too big. I did find some at the dollar store for $2 but they were too big and felt cheap. Instead I bought 6 glass ones, 180 mm high x 85 diameter. The bases were 70 mm across.
I had the idea to use the space at the top of the wine locker under the dining table. I made 2 racks out of scrap StarBoard I had at home, and located them as far back in the locker as possible. I left just enough room at the top to get a glass in and out of the rack. The bottles still have room to get in and out.  The pictures tell the story.
I took the table top off to make working in there easier.

Great idea! I love this, but I recently took my table out and I like the space much better. I don’t often have enough people to even use the table, so I’m a happy camper!

This worked well until my brother-in-law came on board. He reached it to get a glass, but grabbed the second from the top, and lifted it out. The top one, of course, popped out and shattered on the floor. Cleaning up tiny bits of glass in a boat isn’t easy. Thank goodness we were at a dock with shore power so we could use a vacuum.

Shortly afterward my son presented me with a set of stainless steel wine glasses. Problem solved. There is no longer any real glassware on board.
